devourment

History
Formation and early history

Devourment was formed in 1995 on the breakup of Dallas death metal band Necrocide.[3] Necrocide's drummer, Brad Fincher, and guitarist, Braxton Henry, met up with former Meatus vocalist Wayne Knupp to play brutal death metal.[3] However, the newly-formed band achieved little—Knupp moved back to his hometown of Chicago, and Fincher moved to San Antonio for educational reasons. Months later, when the two of them had moved back to Dallas, Henry had formed his own band—Dead Industry. Knupp got in contact with someone he had known years earlier, Brian "Brain" Wynn, and they reformed the band.[3][4] This lineup is often cited as the 'original'.[4][5] The band then developed their first promo, featuring two songs, "Shroud of Encryption" and "Festering Vomitous Mass",[3] which was produced by former and future guitarist Braxton Henry.[5]

Over the next few months, Kevin Clark (formerly of Sintury) joined the band as a secondary guitarist, and Mike Majewski joined on bass.[3] Majewski had previously worked publicizing the band and providing artwork. He had first seen Devourment when their only song was "Shroud of Encryption".[6] The band recorded "Choking on Bile" which they added to their original demo. This was released in 1997 by Corpsegristle Records under the name of Impaled. Knupp later left the band "due to some internal problems".[3] He was replaced by Ruben Rosas, who played guitars and provided vocals in a local band called Detrimental.
[edit] Molesting the Decapitated

In 1999, Devourment signed a record deal with United Guttural and started developing their first album, Molesting the Decapitated, again produced by Braxton.[3] The album was released later that year,[7] and has since been described as "one of the most highly regarded brutal death metal efforts ever recorded" by Teufel, of Teufel's Tomb.[8] Reviews were positive, with Blas, of Global Domination, who praised the album for being so brutal, claiming that "if you look up the word “Brutal” in the dictionary right now, you’d see Devourment’s logo right next to the definition".[9] He praised the vocals, but said that the drums, in places, let the album down due to the fact they were too fast.[9] Dan Staige, of Metal Review, said that the instruments were "remarkably balanced and crisp", and his only criticism was that the "ultra heavy breakdowns" "may sound a little monotonous", but that "you will still bang your head".[10]

The band had a release show for the album in Colarado. Although Majewski claimed that this was in 1998,[1] the album was apparently released in 1999, so he was probably mistaken.[3][7] This show was alongside Macabre and Cephalic Carnage, among others.[3] Shortly afterwards, Rosas was arrested and jailed for two and a half years, meaning the band went their separate ways.[1] Rosas' arrest was described by Majewski as the "last straw",[6][1] as the band was becoming more and more business-like, with Wynn and his wife arranging concerts without consulting the rest of the band.[6]

The band reformed during Rosas' incarceration, with Knupp taking Rosas' place on vocals, and Braxton Henry rejoining the band in the place of Brian Wynn. The band recorded a single song, named "Babykiller", which was featured on a compilation album named Southern Uprising.[3] The song was also featured on the band's own compilation album, 1.3.8, the title of which represents the one song, "Babykiller", with the three songs from Impaled, with the eight songs from Molesting the Decapitated.[10][11] The compilation was released four times—once on Corpse Gristle Records while Rosas was in jail,[11] once on Unmatched Brutality in 2000,[12] once after Rosas' release while the band was working on new material, including the band's first DVD, on Displeased Records,[13] and finally as a limited edition vinyl by label Night of the Vinyl Dead.[14] Upon Rosas's release in 2002, he reformed the band with new members, featuring himself on vocals, guitarists Robert Moore and Kevin Clark, Jeremy Peterson on drums and Joseph Fontenot (later of Jacknife) on bass.[4] Clark was then replaced by Chris Hutto of Ingurgitate.[4] Rosas' new lineup played a few shows, but then split up again.[3] Majewski later referred to the time between the band's two full length albums, explaining that "Ruben and I both made attempts to get the band going again but both failed".[1]
[edit] Butcher the Weak

A few years later, Knupp, Rosas, and Majewski finally properly reformed Devourment. [6] Rosas and Majewski approached Fincher about returning to the band, but he turned it down due to other priorities in his life. Dallas-based grindcore outfit Kill the Client's drummer "Captain" Chris Andrews was approached, but the band was not willing to share drummers. Kill the Client bassist (and producer of the first recording of Butcher the Weak) James Delgado suggested Eric Park, formerly of Suture, and currently of Wrought of Obsidian, who filled out the lineup which would record the second Devourment album.[3] The band entered the studio in August 2005 to begin recording Butcher the Weak, and the completed album was released in November 2005.[3] For this album, Majewski performed vocals, Rosas provided guitars and bass, and Park was on drums.[15] [3] According to Josh Thorne, of fourteen g, the "production is a lot better" than it was on Molesting the Decapitated, but Majewski explained that both albums had been recorded in the same studio.[1] The album contained artwork by Majewski,[16] who works for a special effects company.[1] Felix Schoonen, of Vampire Magazine, said it was odd that the album was self-released by the band, asking "why should a band like Devourment release their own album... every week countless useless releases are thrown on the market by bands that nobody will ever care for and Devourment is somehow forced to release its own album."[17] Shortly after releasing the recording, Devourment sought a permanent bassist. It was brought to their attention that "Captain" Andrews could play stringed instruments as well as drums, and he was once again asked to join the band, entering into Devourment history via the bass guitar. In 2006, the band signed a two album deal with label Brutal Bands,[18] and proceeded to re-record and re-release Butcher the Weak with new bassist Chris Andrews.[3] The new release's cover was yellow, while the self-released version sported a green cover, though they bore the same design.[15] The album received positive reviews, with Jeremy Garner of MetalReview.com saying that "Devourment is one of the few bands that manages to bridge that gap of the more deathgrind oriented side of things ala Disgorge, while simultaneously having enough variation and groove to keep the Dying Fetus fans happy enough."[19] The album was given five out of five stars by Josh of White Trash Devil, calling Devourment the "undisputed kings" of brutal death metal.[20] Criticism of the album included that it was too repetitive, from Mike Lida, of Diabolical Conquest.[21]

On September 15, 2007, Wayne Knupp died of multiple organ failure due to alcohol abuse.[5] Despite no longer being with Devourment, his links with the band were widely reported, including his guest appearance with Devourment at the Central Illinois Metalfest earlier in the year.[22] Knupp's girlfriend posted a message on his MySpace profile confirming his death and thanking people for their support and messages.[23] In an interview with SMNnews.com, Majewski spoke of the impact of the death on the band, saying;[24]

It had a big impact. He was a founding member and really created the vocal style we are known for. Just felt like part of the band died too. Like when he died, it was just weird to think about doing shows or recording without him around, even if he was no longer in the band. He was a good person and definitely deserves to be remembered.

Since Butcher the Weak, Devourment have recorded new material for compilation albums, as well as continuing to tour.[3] They have appeared at various festivals,[3] including Central Illinois Metalfest,[25] The Goregrowler's Ball[26] and Germany's Fuck the Commerce.[27] Devourment also released their second DVD in January 2008.[28] In an interview with SMNnews.com in October 2007, Majewski said that the band aims to complete a third studio album by mid-2008, performing less in 2008.[24]
[edit] Unleash the Carnivore

Devourment's third full-length studio album, Unleash the Carnivore, was released in 2009 through Brutal Bands. The cover features artwork by acclaimed death metal artists Dan Seagrave and Par Olafsson. Rosas provides guest vocals, as does Captain Piss (who also wrote the music for two of the songs on the album).

History
The Cleansing (2002-2008)
Main article: The Cleansing (album)

Suicide Silence were founded in 2002 in Riverside, California, by members Mitch Lucker and Chris Garza and performed their first show at a local area within Riverside and at that time the band consisted of the members Chris Garza and Josh Goddard as guitarists, Mike Bodkins as bassist, Alex Lopez as drummer and two vocalists, Mitch Lucker and Tanner Womack. Shortly after their first performance, Womack was fired from the band and they released their first demo the following next year. They released their second demo in 2003 and recorded their third in 2005. Following within 2005, the band released an EP entitled Suicide Silence EP, two years later, the band released their first full-length album The Cleansing, the album was recorded with producer Krissan Duwason and mixed by Tue Madsen. The album debuted at number 94 on the Billboard 200[1], selling 7,250 copies the first week, and became the second best-selling artist debut in Century Media history.

All prior to signing to Century Media, the band released self-recorded demos in 2003 and 2004, and in late 2005 the group put out their first quality studio-recorded release entitled Suicide Silence EP[2][3] which was released in the UK by Third Degree Records and later re-released by the English label In at the Deep End Records and in the US by SOS Records. The band were included to take part in Mayhem Festival that took place summer 2008. They toured Europe with Parkway Drive and Bury Your Dead, following a successful US tour with the same bands. Also touring with Parkway Drive, A Day to Remember and The Acacia Strain in mid 2008 during the time when they were included to perform at Sweat Fest, and were beginning to gain a wide range of fans throughout the world.

In 2008 the band covered the song "Engine No. 9" by Deftones that appeared on their debut album Adrenaline, Suicide Silence released the cover on their limited edition second EP Green Monster as well as iTunes.

Shortly before embarking on the Mayhem Festival, the band's MySpace profile title read "Suicide Silence (Is writing a new album)". On June 26, 2008, Mitch Lucker appeared on the Headbangers Ball blog podcast. In the interview, Mitch stated that the new album would be recorded through tracks as opposed of being recorded live, such as The Cleansing. The album was released on June 30, 2009, but was previewed on MySpace in the days leading up to the release.[4] He also said the new album would "blow The Cleansing away". Machine was chosen by the band to be the producer of the album.

Suicide Silence began recording their second album entitled No Time to Bleed in February with producer Machine and engineer Will Putney.[5] The band has been playing four new songs, entitled "No Time to Bleed", "Your Creations", "Lifted" and "Wake Up" from the upcoming album on their Cleansing the Nation tour, and the Music As A Weapon tour. In April they received the Revolver Golden God award for "Most Innovative Band" and performed at the awards show.

Suicide Silence were included on 2009's Pedal to the Metal tour, along with the bands Mudvayne, Static-X, Bury Your Dead, Dope and Black Label Society.

In 2009, Suicide Silence was awarded the Golden God award for "Best New Talent", their second Golden God award received to date.[6]

Suicide Silence released their second full-length album No Time to Bleed on June 30, 2009 through Century Media with Machine as producer. The album peaked at #32 on the Billboard 200.[7] Their song "Genocide" is featured in the Saw VI soundtrack.[8]
Styles and influences

Suicide Silence perform an extreme metal musical style known as deathcore,[9][10][11] which is a fusion between the two heavy metal musical styles metalcore and death metal.[12][13] The band perform this style as well as gain influences from several extreme musical genres such as black metal, grindcore, and mathcore[14]. The mathcore elements can be seen in the varied speed changes and occasional time signatures of the band's music. The vocals of Mitch Lucker are frequently fluctuating between death growls and high-pitched screamed vocals used in black metal[15]. The drumming is very fast-paced, grindcore influenced, and employs a liberal use of double bass drumming and blast beats.

bring me the horizon

History
Early years and Count Your Blessings (2004–2007)

Bring Me the Horizon began in 2004 with members of many defunct bands from around their local area.[5][6] They acquired their name based on a line taken from the film Pirates of the Caribbean, in which Captain Jack Sparrow shouts "Now... Bring me that horizon."[4] After slightly altering the original line, by simply changing 'that' to 'the', Bring Me the Horizon then became the official name of the band.

They are currently signed to Visible Noise Records, but were originally signed to Thirty Days of Night Records and were the first band to be signed to that label. The band are also signed to Epitaph Records in the US and to Shock Records in Australia. They released their debut album Count Your Blessings in October 2006 in the UK and in August 2007 in the United States. They have toured in the past with bands such as Lostprophets, The Blackout[7]; Killswitch Engage and The Haunted[8]. They performed a headlining tour of the UK during March and April 2007 with the now defunct metalcore band I Killed the Prom Queen. They played Download Festival 2007 in June also with Iron Maiden, Slayer, and others.[9]

They also played the North American leg of the tour, including a guest appearance Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes on August 6 in Calgary. He joined Oli in chanting the start of their song "Diamonds Aren't Forever".

In November 2007 they toured on the Australian leg of Gigantour, playing three dates. They returned to Australia in May-June 2008, appearing on I Killed The Prom Queen's final ever tour.
Suicide Season and line-up change (2008–2009)

Bring Me the Horizon had been writing and recording a second studio album over the beginning of 2008. They had been in Sweden recording the album throughout April and May with Fredrik Nordström, who has worked with bands such as At The Gates, Arch Enemy, I Killed The Prom Queen and Dimmu Borgir. The album was released on September 29, 2008. Suicide Season is completely different to previous album Count Your Blessings, having a more metalcore vibe to it, similar to the debut EP release, This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For.[citation needed]

The band recently embarked on their first headline tour of the USA, as well as appearing in the 2008 Warped Tour. Bring Me the Horizon are also joined Mindless Self Indulgence, In Case Of Fire, Black Tide and Dir en grey on the Kerrang! and Relentless 2009 UK tour.[citation needed] They are also set to join Thursday, Cancer Bats, Four Year Strong and Pierce the Veil on the Taste of Chaos 2009 North American tour.

It was announced on August 27, 2009 that Bring Me the Horizon will be releasing a remixed version of Suicide Season, titled Suicide Season: Cut Up, in the UK on November 2, 2009.[10] In an interview with Rock Sound, Oliver Sykes stated that the idea came about after asking a friend to remix one of their songs, and after being very pleased with the end result the band decided to take it a step further and get the whole of Suicide Season remixed. Musicians and producers featured on the album includes Tek-One, Robot Sonic, Ben Weinman from The Dillinger Escape Plan, Outcry Collective, L’Amour La Morgue (Ian Watkins from Lostprophets), Utah Saints and Shawn Crahan from Slipknot. Sykes also stated that “There’s not a song on there that really sounds like the original. What’s great though is the diversity of each song. There’s dub-step to hip-hop, electro to drum and bass”[11]

In March 2009, guitarist Curtis Ward left the band. A number of reasons have been cited for his departure: in an interview, bassist Matt Kean commented that "it became apparent he wasn't enjoying it" and that it was "just about commitment".[12] In May 2009, Jona Weinhofen, formerly of I Killed The Prom Queen and Bleeding Through, joined the band on a temporary basis to fill-in for Curtis. However, it was revealed in July 2009 that he would become an official member of Bring Me the Horizon, partly due to his discontent with living in America, hence leaving Bleeding Through. According to Oliver Sykes in an interview on the subject, Weinhofen has injected the band with a new-found enthusiasm, causing the bands performances to be 'so much better and refreshing', and he feels they have 'stepped up another level'.[13]
Third studio album (2009–present)

In an interview with Kerrang! Magazine, it has be revealed that Bring Me the Horizon will begin writing the follow-up to Suicide Season during the summer of 2009, with the plan to go into Studio Fredman with producer Fredrik Nordström (who produced Suicide Season) in March 2010, hopefully resulting in an album release in summer 2010.[13]
Controversy
Nottingham incident

While on tour in the United Kingdom allegations were made against vocalist Oliver Sykes that he urinated upon and then assaulted a female fan after a gig at Nottingham Rock City when she allegedly refused his sexual advances. Sykes was subsequently charged with urinating on the fan, but not with physical assault.[14] Online Music Zine Drowned In Sound claimed that Bring Me The Horizon were banned from Nottingham Rock City.[15] However the band's label Visible Noise denied these rumors and the band subsequently played Nottingham Rock City on December 1, 2007.[16]

On April 13, Sykes appeared in Nottingham Magistrates Court on a charge of common assault relating to the alleged urination incident, to which he pleaded not guilty. The case was adjourned until early May.[17] On 3 May 2007 Sykes attended Nottingham Magistrates court for the second time and confirmed his not guilty plea. The case was adjourned again until 17 September.[18] Due to lack of evidence, all charges against Sykes were dropped.[19]
YouTube video with Architects

During a tour, Bring Me the Horizon and Architects filmed a video showing fights between Oliver Sykes and Architects' lead singer Sam Carter. The video was filmed at an all-day event in Karlsruhe, Germany and shows what seemed to be Sam Carter committing acts of physical violence towards Oliver. The video was uploaded onto the online video website, YouTube of which it attracted thousands of hits. This video outraged many Bring Me the Horizon fans causing many people to send hate mail towards Sam Carter.

"We're mates with the guys and were sharing a bus for the whole two week tour!" Carter told Kerrang!. "The fact that people believed it was real is just so ridiculous! We filmed the fight about three times and even added in comedy punch noises and yet kids were still sending us over-the-top hate mail!" Oliver Sykes also commented saying "All-day events can get boring very fast so we conjured up the first idiotic thing we could think of and made it as unbelievable as possible. Sam was getting death threats from kids off MySpace and at the same time getting praised for laying me out! We're sorry if anyone was upset by this although I'm sure most people reading this probably like the thought of me getting a punch in the face!". The issue was later resolved with things returning back to normal.[20]
